Your household, expected 2027 income, location, immigration eligibility, and access to other coverage help determine what you qualify for. Possibilities include an ACA Marketplace plan with premium tax credits, extra savings on care, Medicaid or CHIP, or a Marketplace plan at full price. An official application provides your eligibility result; a ZIP code alone cannot.
This guide addresses the 2027 plan year. If you need coverage during the rest of 2026, use 2026 information and check your current enrollment options. As of October 27, 2026, HealthCare.gov says its updated 2027 income-and-savings estimates will be available November 1. Check the current savings tool.
What types of help might be available?
| Option | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Premium tax credit | May lower the monthly premium for an eligible Marketplace plan. | Household income, tax rules, other coverage, and local plan costs. |
| Cost-sharing reductions | May reduce deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket limit. | Income-based savings require an eligible Silver plan. |
| Medicaid or CHIP | Free or low-cost coverage for eligible people. | Your state’s rules, income, household, and other eligibility factors. |
| Full-price Marketplace coverage | An ACA plan without federal premium assistance. | Marketplace eligibility and an available enrollment period. |
These programs are not interchangeable. For example, qualifying for a premium tax credit does not automatically mean you qualify for help with deductibles. Your eligibility notice will explain the assistance available to you. Premium tax credits · Cost-sharing reductions.
Medicaid and CHIP rules vary by state. Children may qualify even when their parents do not. You can apply for these programs year-round. Check Medicaid and CHIP.
What information determines my eligibility?
Your expected income and tax household
Use income for the year you want coverage. The Marketplace generally considers you, your spouse, and your tax dependents, including people who do not need insurance. Dependent income has specific reporting rules. Use the official guidance rather than counting only the people who will be on your plan. Estimate your household income.
Coverage available through a job or government program
An offer of affordable employer coverage that meets minimum value can prevent eligibility for premium savings, even if you decline the offer. The employee and family members can have different affordability results. Enrollment in job-based coverage also affects savings. Bring the actual employer plan costs and coverage details to the application. Review employer coverage rules.
Eligibility for programs such as Medicare or qualifying Medicaid coverage can also affect the premium tax credit. Tax filing status and whether another person can claim you as a dependent matter too. Married applicants generally must file jointly to claim the credit, with limited exceptions. Review the IRS eligibility criteria.
Where you live and whether you can enroll
ZIP code helps identify your local Marketplace plans, but it does not establish income eligibility or promise a specific premium. Marketplace eligibility generally requires U.S. residence, citizenship or an eligible lawful-presence status, and not being incarcerated. Enrollment timing is a separate requirement. Check basic eligibility.
What changes for some applicants in 2027?
Federal financial-assistance eligibility narrows for some noncitizens. CMS’s 2027 guidance identifies eligible noncitizens as lawful permanent residents, Cuban or Haitian entrants, and people lawfully residing under a Compact of Free Association, subject to other eligibility rules. U.S. citizens and nationals remain potentially eligible.
Other lawfully present individuals may remain eligible to buy Marketplace coverage without those federal savings. Review your current immigration information and the Marketplace’s eligibility notice. Do not assume that qualifying in 2026 means the same result for 2027. Read the CMS guidance.
Our 2027 coverage changes guide also explains the updated employer-affordability test and other cost changes.
How do I find out what I actually qualify for?
Complete an application through HealthCare.gov or your state Marketplace using accurate information for the coverage year. Your result identifies the coverage and assistance available; plan shopping shows actual premiums and benefits. If the Marketplace requests documents, follow its instructions and deadlines.
Keep your income estimate current after enrollment. Excess advance premium tax credits must be repaid in full under the rules applying from tax year 2026 onward. See the IRS repayment update.
Can I qualify if I am self-employed or between jobs?
Possibly. Employment status alone does not decide eligibility. Expected household income, other coverage, enrollment timing, and the other rules still apply. Estimate variable earnings using your records and expected changes, then update the Marketplace if those estimates change.
Does a $0 premium mean all my care is free?
No. A premium is the monthly cost of coverage. Deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and other plan rules can still apply when you use care. No particular premium or savings amount is guaranteed by this website.
